The Nuremberg Metropolitan Region

European Metropolitan Regions must be able to perform certain functions in order to comply with the requisite standards. Since 1995, they have been defined, identified and funded by the German Federal Ministers’ Conference for Spatial Planning and are subject to stringent criteria.

Decision and control functions

In all essential areas, the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region is a model of its kind. As a densely populated conurbation of international significance, it is home to major, economically relevant German companies. Important economic and political decisions are made from here.

Role as innovators and competitors

With 20 institutions of higher education and 22 internationally ranked research institutes, a vibrant theatre landscape and the infrastructure needed for major events, there is plenty of creative drive for social, technological and cultural developments in the region.

Gateway function

The extensive transportation network, comprising all means of travel by water, land and air, facilitates the exchange of knowledge and information in the region and farther afield.

Role as symbol
